Playing with cats: small hunting games for everyday life

A wand toy becomes interesting through its movement: disappearing briefly, moving along an edge and pausing. Watch your cat to discover which games they choose to join.

Move the prey away

Move the toy mainly along the floor and away from your cat. A cardboard box edge can provide a hiding place. Allow time to watch and stalk instead of waving the toy constantly. Some cats pounce quickly; others observe for longer.

A simple play sequence

  1. Invite: move the toy slowly within sight and let your cat decide.
  2. Build interest: hide it briefly behind a safe object.
  3. Allow success: let your cat actually catch the toy repeatedly.
  4. Wind down: slow the movement and end with an achievable catch, followed by rest.

Match the session to your cat

Watch attention and willingness to move rather than aiming for a fixed duration. Several short invitations may fit better than one long session. Turning away or leaving is a reason to pause. Adapt activity to health limitations with veterinary advice where needed.

You do not need a new toy every day. Rotate a small selection of safe toys. A different movement or quiet play location may provide variety.

Hands are not prey

Avoid using hands or feet as targets. Keep fingers away from claws with a wand toy. Store strings, ribbons and swallowable parts out of reach after supervised play. Check toys regularly and remove damaged items.

Offer individual play in multi-cat homes

A quicker cat may take over every turn. Separate sessions allow quieter cats to participate without competition or pressure.
