Your cat uses its water bowl, but you would like to offer an additional drinking option? First take a look at the location. An extra bowl can create a practical choice. Whether your cat accepts it will show itself in everyday life. With clear preparation you can find out which places it visits without disrupting its familiar water supply.
The existing water station stays
Clean, fresh water must be available at all times. Therefore leave an existing water station in place while you set up an additional one. Even an outdoor cat needs water indoors. Do not remove a bowl to force your cat to try the new location.
First note where water is located and which doors on the way to it are typically closed. Our practical recommendation: draw a small sketch of your home with the feeding area, litter tray and the existing bowls. This way you can spot potential additional locations without having to rearrange things immediately.
Choose a quiet, accessible location
Cats Protection recommends offering water separate from food and the litter tray. Choose a quiet spot where your cat will not be constantly disturbed by passing people or other animals. A bowl is usually harder to place between a door and a walkway than slightly to the side of it.
Leave enough space around the bowl so your cat can choose its position and survey the surroundings. Do not force the bowl into a tight corner. Also check practically: is it level and stable? Can no one trip over it? Does the access remain clear when a chair is pulled out or a door is moved?
For multi-cat households, distributed water stations make sense. Three bowls placed immediately next to each other do not offer spatial alternatives. iCatCare recommends water on every level of the home used by the cat. Pay attention to actually well accessible places; a high ledge is not a prerequisite for a good offer.
Prepare an additional bowl
If you are looking for another bowl, the Granicium cat bowl by Denk Keramik is one possible option. According to the product information the ceramic bowl is also intended for water. Whether your cat will like this particular shape and location cannot be concluded from that.
Clean the bowl before first use according to its care instructions and fill with fresh drinking water. For this first trial you do not need food additives in the water or a change of the usual food. Put the bowl in place and let your cat decide for itself when to investigate it. Sitting down, holding it or bringing the nose close to the water surface are not part of this.
Observe without turning it into a drinking test
iCatCare emphasises individual preferences and gradual changes. Not having yet seen your cat drink from a bowl does not prove it will never use it. Some cats drink when nobody is watching. A short glance is therefore only a snapshot.
For everyday observation we suggest four simple note fields. This is an organisational aid, not a method to measure fluid needs:
-
Location: e.g. “living room, to the side of the shelving”.
-
Offering: which bowl is placed there.
-
Observation: for example “drank”, “walked past” or “not observed”.
-
Surroundings: e.g. visitor, closed door or another animal at the access.
Only record what you actually saw. “Not observed” is more accurate than “doesn’t like the bowl”. If several animals use the same bowl, you also cannot deduce how much a particular cat drank from the lowering water level.
Change one thing and plan the care
If the additional location does not fit into everyday life, first change only that location. This way it remains traceable what you have offered. Do not replace all bowls at the same time or rearrange the whole feeding corner. The previously proven water stations remain accessible.
Each additional bowl needs care: fresh water daily, regular cleaning and thorough rinsing. Plan these into your existing routine straight away. You can find the individual cleaning steps in our guide Cleaning cat bowls: a simple hygiene routine.
Short checklist for the new water station
- Is the familiar water supply still available?
- Quiet spot separate from food and litter tray?
- Bowl placed securely and access clear?
- Fresh water and cleaning planned?
- Observations recorded objectively, without deducing a drinking amount?
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy a drinking fountain?
No. Some cats like running water, others use bowls. A fountain is a possible additional choice, not a requirement for this location check. It does not guarantee a certain drinking amount nor that your cat will prefer it.
How long must I try a new location?
There is no fixed number of days here. Give your cat the opportunity for voluntary exploration and assess recurring observations rather than a single moment. However, an impractical, unsafe or regularly blocked place should be changed immediately.
What if my cat suddenly drinks differently?
A sudden and marked increase or decrease in drinking should be checked by a veterinarian. Do not wait for the result of a location trial for this. Whether a cat takes in enough fluid cannot be reliably assessed from the use of a single bowl; among other things its food also plays a role.
