Cleaning cat bowls: a simple everyday routine

A bowl may look clean while still holding food residue or a slippery film. A regular routine helps remove this properly. Always rinse thoroughly before refilling.

How often?

The FDA recommends washing pet food bowls with soap and hot water after each use. Clean and refill water bowls daily, or sooner when visibly dirty. Topping up old water does not replace cleaning.

A practical sequence

  1. Discard food residue and empty the bowl.
  2. Clean with suitable washing-up detergent and water, including edges, undersides and recesses.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove detergent.
  4. Air-dry in a clean place or use a fresh cloth.
  5. Clean the surrounding surface and wash your hands.

A dedicated brush helps keep pet-bowl utensils separate. Clean and dry it regularly too. Store clean bowls separately from used ones.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Ceramic, steel, coatings, rubber rings and attached feet do not all tolerate the same treatment. Only dismantle accessories as instructed.

A drinking fountain also needs its specified cleaning and filter-change routine. A filter does not remove the need to clean the container and accessible pump parts.

Check for damage

Look for cracks, sharp edges or damaged surfaces while drying. Replace chipped bowls and avoid abrasive tools that may scratch them. Ask your vet about appropriate hygiene measures for special situations such as an infectious illness.

A spare set helps

A spare water bowl keeps fresh water available during washing. Measure your space and any holder before buying a replacement. Explore cat bowls and feeding dishes for models and accessories.
